Store Info:

Whether you shop Cabelas.com, visit one of our many retail locations, or order from the colorful Cabela's catalog, you'll find that serving people who love the outdoors is our #1 priority. From humble beginnings in 1961 with a simple ad in a Wyoming newspaper and in the back of a Sports Afield magazine in 1962, Cabela's has grown into what you know today as the "World's Foremost Outfitter." That growth is the direct result of the commitment by two men, Dick and Jim Cabela. Our founders have kept Cabela's a family-owned company and still play a very active role in the organization. The company currently employs over 7,000 persons and shares its success with them through various benefits and incentive programs. Cabela's is committed to providing quality products, value, service, and guaranteed customer satisfaction to outdoorsmen and women throughout the world. With over 40 years of service to our customers, our goals remain the same: a good deal, a fair shake, and better service with quality products at competitive prices. That's what Cabela's is about - today, yesterday, and for the future.

Cabelas Reviews

I do not know where I got my city girl genes, but I can still remember my horror when my parents would announce that we were going camping. Since I have unmanageable hair (not to mention a grumpy morning disposition), I would wake up early at campgrounds and race to the bathhouse while praying that no cute guys would see me and make the connection later in the day. Then I would find cold water spitting from a spigot behind a door with the latch busted. There were the bugs that got friendly with every inch of my body, and the ones that landed in the scorched scrambled eggs. I won’t even tell you what the camping-out meatball stew did to me, but I had to make 4am trips to the bathhouse. I was pretty sure that every camping trip was designed to try my religion.

When I finally reached the age of majority, I swore off camping. I just couldn’t see sleeping outside. You lay there listening to owls and goodness knows what is making those other sounds. You start to feel clammy, and that is the dew collecting on any part of your body outside the sleeping bag. You put the bag over your head, and then you get hot and can’t breathe. Finally, it is morning . . . and all the other happy campers are smoking you out with leafy campfires.

Then I had boys, and boys just seem to think that camping would be more fun than spitting watermelon seeds at the neighbors. Caleb and Eli joined Cub Scouts, and that put even more pressure on the mom person to get with the program and buy some camping gear. This was a problem, since the mom person did not think she was going to be sleeping under the stars and peeling fish for dinner. She still thought that the cotton long handles were the way to go for cold weather (wrong answer).

I asked the Cub master where I should get some camping gear. I guess I looked like a deer caught in headlights, because he showed me all his stuff and explained what I needed and why. Then he said that Cabelas would be a good place to shop. That was 2 hours away though, so that would be a major trip. Fortunately, Cabelas had a web site, so I became an online outdoors person. This may explain why I get mail from Greenpeace and the NRA. Actually, I don’t know how I got on the Greenpeace list . . . Anyway, I guess Postmaster Sue thinks that I am schizophrenic.

If you go to Cabelas, then you will see different types of outdoor fun (or torture) listed. You can find everything from archery to footwear as well as camping where I shop. Then, you get a break down within the category. So, I can find items in the camping section that I need for trips with the boys.

The descriptions are good, but I still was rather lost. That’s OK. They have a toll free number 1-800-237-4444. I called up Cabelas and explained that I needed help. The lady on the phone (I wish I had her name) was really helpful. She walked me through the different options and what would be best and why. One question was about the size of the tent . . .

Do I need a 2 or 4 man tent if I am one woman with 2 little boys?

The answer is that we would probably fit in the 2 man for a while, but the 4 man would grow with us and also allow room to keep the cooler in the tent. The help lady also told me about a 4 man on sale, so I spent about what I expected for the 2 man but got the larger tent.

Once I purchased from Cabelas, then I got a catalog. This is a newspaper quality book with loads of outdoor gear in black and white. It gives me a reference when I need to buy. You can get that free online by requesting from the home page, and I find it really helpful. I was amazed to find out how much outdoor stuff I could buy if needed.

I have stuck with gear type items rather than clothing and footwear, but they do have sizing guides online. Those are easy to understand and follow. I haven’t needed to size for sleeping bags (other than adult/child), self blow-up mattresses, lanterns, salt/pepper shake, and such. But I think the guidelines look easy enough to order from.

Shipping is good. They charge modestly depending on what you buy and ship fast. I got most of the items for Christmas, and they arrived in plenty of time. Everything was packed well and arrived in good condition.

If you have a problem with something, then Cabelas is glad to work with you. You can return by mail or take the item to a store and get a refund or a replacement. Or you can call and get help with things like how to blow up those self blow up mattresses.

Although I have just used Cabelas for buying gear items, they also have articles on outdoor topics like fishing and hunting. Featured this month is an article on training your dog. I don’t think Hershey is going to be an outdoorsy dog and flush out rabbits. We put out food for the rabbits and squirrels, so that would be a conflict of interests.

You can post up photos with your outdoor catches and see other hunters. I prefer not to see dead animals though I will pack meat and label and date. A country girl has got to do what a country girl has got to do. I like meat for the winter, but I was not born with the heart (or the stomach) of a hunter.

The local guys around here swear by Cabelas, and I find the store top notch from a lightweight perspective. If you are outdoorsy or if you are not (and need help), then I would say that Cabelas is a good bet.
